Launch Price $99 - The Witness Compact Chair is a lightweight compact camping chair designed especially for sports parents and features

A simple 6-click setup, so you can be seated in around 10 seconds.

There are no loose poles and no separate seat material to assemble.

Unfold the frame, extend the legs, click each section securely into place and your chair is ready.

Weighing just 1.7kg and folding down to 39 × 13 × 13cm, it is easy to carry alongside sports bags, umbrellas and everything else that comes with weekend sport. Whether you are at football, soccer, netball, rugby, AFL, hockey, cricket, athletics or a swim carnival, it is the chair you will actually leave in the car.

Note

Your Witness Compact may feel firm when first opened as the fabric is new and tightly fitted. With use, the fabric will naturally settle and relax slightly, making the chair easier to open and close. As the fabric settles, you may notice a small amount of additional movement through the seat and arm areas. This is expected and does not affect normal use of the chair.

If you notice excessive movement, damage, or anything that doesn't seem right, stop using the chair and contact us. We're happy to check it for you.

Lightweight Camping Chairs: How Light Is Actually Light?

If you’re shopping for a camping chair, you’ll see the word lightweight everywhere.

Lightweight camping chair.

Ultra-light chair.

Portable camping chair.

Compact chair.

But what does lightweight actually mean?

Is a 5 kg camping chair lightweight?

What about 3 kg?

Is 1.7 kg unusually light?

And should you always choose the lightest camping chair you can find?

The answer is more complicated than simply looking at one number.

A good lightweight camping chair needs to balance:

Weight. Packed size. Strength. Comfort. Portability.

Because a chair can be extremely light and still be inconvenient to carry, uncomfortable to sit in or unsuitable for the way you camp.

What Is Considered a Lightweight Camping Chair?

There isn’t one official weight that suddenly turns a camping chair into a lightweight camping chair.

Different chair designs are built for different purposes.

A large padded camping chair with armrests, steel framing and a high back will naturally weigh more than a small hiking chair.

That doesn’t necessarily make the heavier chair bad.

It simply means it has different priorities.

For most people comparing camping chairs, it makes more sense to think about weight in broad categories.

Under 2 kg

This is genuinely lightweight territory for a camping chair.

Chairs in this range are attractive when portability matters.

They can be particularly useful for:

  • sports parents

  • caravan travellers

  • camper trailers

  • teardrop campers

  • smaller cars

  • road trips

  • festivals

  • picnics

  • beach trips

  • people who regularly carry their chair some distance

The Witness Compact Chair, for example, weighs approximately 1.7 kg.

Around 2–3 kg

This can still be a very useful lightweight range.

At this weight, manufacturers may be able to add more seating area, a higher back or additional features without turning the chair into something particularly heavy.

The Witness Comfort 360 Chair weighs approximately 2.7 kg and adds a high-back design, integrated headrest and 360-degree swivel.

Above 3 kg

This doesn’t automatically mean a chair is too heavy.

Many traditional camping chairs weigh considerably more because they use larger frames, steel construction, additional padding, armrests or other features.

If you’re carrying the chair only a few metres from your car to your campsite, that might not matter.

But once you start walking longer distances, every extra kilogram becomes more noticeable.

Why Chair Weight Matters

Imagine picking up a 5 kg chair beside your car.

It probably doesn’t feel particularly heavy.

Now carry it several hundred metres.

Add a backpack.

An esky.

An umbrella.

A child's sports bag.

Perhaps another chair.

Suddenly the difference between a 5 kg chair and a 1.7 kg lightweight compact chair becomes much more obvious.

This is why you should consider weight in the context of how you'll actually use the chair.

Don't Look at Weight Alone

The number on the specification sheet is important.

But it isn't the whole story.

A camping chair can weigh very little and still be awkward to transport.

Why?

Because packed size matters too.

Imagine two chairs.

Chair A weighs 1.7 kg but packs into a short compact package.

Chair B weighs the same amount but remains close to a metre long when folded.

They technically weigh the same.

But they may feel completely different to carry and store.

That's why the best lightweight camping chairs combine low weight with compact packed dimensions.

For a real example, the Witness Compact weighs approximately 1.7 kg and folds to around 39 × 13 × 13 cm.

Lightweight vs Portable: What's the Difference?

These words are often used as though they mean exactly the same thing.

They don't.

Lightweight

Describes how much the chair weighs.

Portable

Describes how easy the chair is to transport.

A good portable camping chair needs more than a low number on the scales.

It should ideally combine:

  • low weight

  • compact packed dimensions

  • easy carrying

  • quick setup

  • simple pack-down

That is why a slightly heavier chair can sometimes be more portable than a poorly designed lighter chair.

What About Foldable Camping Chairs?

The term foldable camping chair covers a huge range of products.

Technically, almost every camping chair folds in some way.

The important question is:

How far does it fold?

A traditional folding chair may collapse quickly but still remain long and bulky.

A compact foldable chair may use additional folding points to reduce the packed length dramatically.

For people with limited storage space, that difference can matter more than weight alone.

Lightweight Doesn't Mean Flimsy

This is one of the biggest concerns people have when looking at lightweight camping chairs.

If a chair weighs less, does that mean it is weaker?

Not necessarily.

Frame material and design matter enormously.

Many traditional chairs use steel frames.

Steel can be strong, but it also adds weight.

Lightweight camping chairs may use aluminium or alloy construction to reduce weight while maintaining useful strength.

The Witness Compact uses an aircraft-grade alloy frame while carrying a stated weight rating of up to 150 kg.

That's why you shouldn't judge chair strength by weight alone.

Look at:

  • frame construction

  • connection points

  • fabric

  • leg design

  • stated weight capacity

  • warranty

  • intended use

Weight Capacity and Chair Weight Are Different Things

It's easy to confuse the two.

Chair weight tells you how much the chair itself weighs.

Weight capacity tells you how much load the manufacturer states the chair is designed to support.

A heavy chair doesn't automatically have a higher weight capacity.

And a lightweight chair isn't automatically weak.

For example:

The Witness Compact weighs approximately 1.7 kg while having a stated weight capacity of up to 150 kg.

The Witness Comfort 360 weighs approximately 2.7 kg and also carries a stated 150 kg weight rating.

How Light Do Sports Parents Need?

For sports parents, chair weight can become very important.

You're rarely carrying only the chair.

You may also have:

  • sports bags

  • water bottles

  • food

  • towels

  • jackets

  • umbrellas

  • shade

  • siblings' equipment

Then you have to walk from the car park to the field, court, athletics track or swimming pool.

A lightweight portable chair can make those trips considerably easier.

This is one of the reasons the Witness Compact is designed around maximum portability.

How Light Do Caravan Travellers Need?

Caravan travellers have slightly different priorities.

You may not carry the chair particularly far.

Instead, you're thinking about:

storage space and overall travelling weight.

Reducing a few kilograms might not transform your entire caravan setup.

But reducing weight and bulk across multiple pieces of equipment can add up.

Two 1.7 kg chairs weigh approximately 3.4 kg combined.

Two 5 kg chairs weigh 10 kg combined.

That is a difference of more than 6 kg in one category of camping equipment alone.

And the smaller packed dimensions can be equally valuable when you're working with limited caravan storage.

What About Teardrop Campers?

Weight and packed size become even more relevant with a teardrop camper.

Teardrop camping is built around efficient use of limited space.

Your chairs need to compete for storage with:

  • cooking equipment

  • clothing

  • food

  • outdoor mats

  • tools

  • awnings

  • water equipment

  • other camping gear

That makes a lightweight compact camping chair particularly well suited to this style of travel.

A chair that is both small and light follows exactly the same philosophy as the teardrop camper itself:

Make better use of limited space.

How Light Should a Chair Be for Road Trips?

Road trips are another situation where compact, lightweight gear makes sense.

You might use the chair at:

  • campsites

  • beaches

  • picnic areas

  • lookouts

  • roadside stops

  • festivals

  • sporting events

A lightweight portable camping chair can stay in the vehicle without dominating valuable luggage space.

The easier something is to keep in the car, the more likely you are to actually have it when you need it.

Is the Lightest Chair Always Best?

No.

This is where people can become too focused on specifications.

If one chair weighs 900 grams but is uncomfortable for the way you use it, the low weight doesn't necessarily make it the better choice.

You might happily carry another kilogram if that gives you:

  • better support

  • a higher back

  • a wider seat

  • greater stability

  • more useful features

The correct question isn't:

What's the lightest camping chair?

It's:

What's the lightest chair that still gives me what I need?

Witness Compact: When Low Weight Is the Priority

The Witness lightweight compact camping chair is aimed at people who prioritise portability.

Key specifications include:

  • approximately 1.7 kg

  • approximately 39 × 13 × 13 cm folded

  • stated weight capacity up to 150 kg

  • aircraft-grade alloy frame

  • 210D four-grid ripstop fabric

  • one-piece six-click setup

  • around 10-second setup

  • cup holder

  • mesh storage

  • carry bag

This combination makes it particularly suitable when you want something that is both lightweight and genuinely compact.

Witness Comfort 360: When Comfort Matters More

Not everyone should choose the lightest chair.

If you spend long periods sitting at a campsite, fishing spot or sports field, you may prefer additional support.

The Witness Comfort 360 lightweight camping chair takes a different approach.

At approximately 2.7 kg, it is around one kilogram heavier than the Compact but adds:

  • high-back support

  • integrated headrest

  • larger seating area

  • smooth 360° swivel

  • stated 150 kg weight rating

  • compact folding design

So the additional kilogram is being used to provide additional comfort and functionality.

1.7 kg vs 2.7 kg: Which Is Better?

Neither.

It depends on what matters to you.

Choose Around 1.7 kg If You Prioritise:

  • maximum portability

  • minimum carrying weight

  • smaller storage

  • moving between sports fields

  • leaving the chair in your vehicle

  • teardrop camping

  • road trips

Choose Around 2.7 kg If You Prioritise:

  • high-back support

  • longer periods sitting

  • integrated head support

  • 360-degree rotation

  • additional seating comfort

  • camping and extended sporting events

You can compare both designs in our Witness Compact vs Comfort 360 guide.

A Better Way to Compare Lightweight Camping Chairs

Instead of simply sorting camping chairs from lightest to heaviest, compare these six things together:

  1. Chair weight

  2. Packed dimensions

  3. Weight capacity

  4. Comfort

  5. Setup time

  6. How far you'll actually carry it

That gives you a much more realistic picture.

A chair that saves 300 grams but doubles in packed length may not be a better portable chair.

Likewise, carrying an extra kilogram may be worthwhile if you're buying a high-back chair that you'll sit in for six hours at a time.

So, How Light Is Actually Light?

For a full-size outdoor chair rather than a tiny backpacking stool, anything around or below 2 kg is getting into genuinely lightweight territory.

Around 2–3 kg can still be very light for a chair offering additional comfort or features.

Once you move into heavier traditional chairs, portability gradually becomes less of an advantage.

But there is no magic number.

The best target depends on how you use the chair.

The Bottom Line

When buying a lightweight camping chair, don't chase the smallest number on the scales.

Look at the complete package.

A good lightweight chair should balance:

Low weight. Compact packed size. Strength. Comfort. Easy carrying. Simple setup.

For people who prioritise portability, a chair around 1.7 kg can provide a very useful balance.

For people who want a higher back and additional comfort, moving up towards 2.7 kg can still give you a lightweight portable chair while providing features that matter during longer periods sitting.

Ultimately, the best lightweight camping chair isn't necessarily the lightest chair available.

It's the lightest chair that still does everything you need it to do.
